Cohort-Based vs. Self-Paced Courses: Which Should You Choose?

1 min read

Overview #

When creating a course on VarsityScape, the first decision you make is the most important: Format. We support two distinct learning models, and choosing the right one depends on your educational goals.

1. Cohort-Based (Live & Scheduled) #

  • A live, scheduled course with a group of students learning together.
  • Best For: Bootcamps, university-style semesters, high-ticket coaching, and programs requiring peer interaction.
  • Key Features:
    • Fixed Schedule: Students start and end on specific dates.
    • Live Classes: Integrated discussion sessions for real-time teaching.
    • Community: Students are grouped into a private “Batch” (e.g., Cohort 13) for focused interaction.

2. Self-Paced (On-Demand) #

  • An on-demand course that students take at their own pace.
  • Best For: Evergreen video libraries, introductory workshops, and low-ticket products.
  • Key Features:
    • Flexible Access: Students can join and watch anytime.
    • No “Start Date”: Content is available immediately upon enrollment.
    • Automation: Requires less active management from the instructor.

Troubleshooting & FAQ #

  • Can I switch a course from Self-Paced to Cohort-Based later?
No. Because the database structure for handling student intakes is different, you cannot toggle between them after creation. You would need to create a new course.
  • Can I have both formats for the same topic?
Yes. Many academies create a “Self-Paced” version for cheaper access and a “Cohort-Based” version for a premium, guided experience.
