Sending Direct Messages to Students

< 1 min read

Overview #

While public channels are great for group discussions, sometimes you need to give private feedback or check in on a specific learner. VarsityScape allows Instructors to send Direct Messages (DMs) that trigger instant notifications.

How to Send a DM #

  1. Navigate to the specific Course.
  2. Click the Students tab.
  3. Click on the name of the student you wish to contact. This opens their Learner Profile.
  4. Click the Message button near their profile photo.
  5. Type your message and hit Send.

Where do messages go? #

  • The Student: Receives an email notification and a red badge on their dashboard “Community” icon.
  • The Instructor: You can view your ongoing conversations in the main Community tab on your sidebar, under the “Direct Messages” section.

Troubleshooting & FAQ #

  • Can students DM each other?
Yes, unless you have disabled this in your global settings. Peer-to-peer messaging helps build networking value within the cohort.
  • Can I message the entire class at once?
For bulk announcements, it is better to post in the #Announcements channel inside the course rather than DMing 50 students individually.
