Managing Course Status: Draft, Published, and Archived

1 min read

Overview #

You don’t want students seeing a half-finished course. VarsityScape uses three status states to control visibility. You can see the current status next to the course title in the header.

1. Draft (Default) #

  • What it means: The course is still being built.
  • Who sees it: Only Admins and Instructors.
  • Use case: Building curriculum, testing quizzes, or setting up dates.
  • Indicator: A grey “Draft” badge appears next to the course title.

2. Published (Live) #

  • What it means: The course is live and accepting enrollments.
  • Who sees it: Students, and the public (if listed on your Public Site).
  • How to Activate: Click the white Publish Course button in the top right corner of the Course Builder.

3. Archived #

  • What it means: The course is retired. It is hidden from the dashboard but data is preserved.
  • Who sees it: Admins (in the “Archived” filter).
  • Use case: Old cohorts or deprecated curriculum you no longer teach.

Troubleshooting & FAQ #

  • I clicked Publish, but I got an error.
You cannot publish an empty course. Ensure you have created at least one Module and one Lesson before publishing.
  • Can I un-publish a course?
Yes. You can revert a course to “Draft” status in the Course Settings. Warning: This will immediately revoke access for current students.
